INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION BARRIERS IN BUILDING SOLIDARITY BETWEEN EAST NUSA TENGGARA STUDENTS AND NATIVE SOLO STUDENTS IN UNIVERSITAS SLAMET RIYADI SURAKARTA (FLOBAMORATA ORGANIZATION)
Abstrak
The objective of this research is to analyze the intercultural communication barriers in building solidarity between East Nusa Tenggara students and native Solo students in Universitas Slamet Riyadi Surakarta. Intercultural communication barriers could be found in the process of communication that takes place through interactions. According to Mulyana, intercultural communication is effective when someone succeeds in conveying its purposes. The process of communication is also categorized as effective if the stimulus conveyed and intended by the sender is closely related to the stimulus captured and understood by the recipient. According to Wursanto, there are three kinds of technical communication barriers: technical barriers, semantic barriers, traits and behavioral barriers. This research shows there are several communication barriers, such as cultural differences, misinterpretation, and high anxiety becomes the main issues.
This research is done inductively based on the qualitative research method with a case study approach. This research is focusing on the complexity of problems faced by students involved in this research. The data is collected through an interview method that involved three students from East Nusa Tenggara and two native Solo students with a total of five students as the objects of research. This research was analyzed descriptively to gain a deeper picture towards the research objects. To verify the data, the researcher uses the triangulation data method.
This research concludes that there are several intercultural communication barriers in building solidarity between East Nusa Tenggara students and native Solo students, including language barrier, high anxiety, and misinterpretation as the main issues. Throughout the process, students are still facing problems in communicating as a newcomer. Researchers suggest in eliminating the intercultural communication barriers between East Nusa Tenggara students and native Solo students could be done by deepening and practicing the habits of the newcomers, namely students from East Nusa Tenggara.
