Abstract

Soil contamination by heavy metal iron (Fe) can reduce soil quality and impair plant growth, highlighting the need for environmentally friendly remediation technologies. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in optimizing the phytoremediation of simulated Fe-contaminated soil using Sansevieria trifasciata. The study was conducted experimentally using three treatments: Fe-contaminated soil without plants or AMF as the control (A), Fe-contaminated soil planted with S. trifasciata without AMF (B), and Fe-contaminated soil planted with S. trifasciata and inoculated with AMF (C), with three replications for each treatment, resulting in nine experimental units. Each unit contained 5 kg of subsoil artificially contaminated with Fe using FeSO₄ to an initial concentration of 13.52 ppm. Phytoremediation was conducted for 12 weeks, with observations of Fe concentration, soil pH, organic carbon, cation exchange capacity (CEC), and plant growth. Data were analyzed descriptively based on mean values. Treatment C resulted in the highest Fe reduction, from 13.52 to 2.98 ppm, with a removal efficiency of 77.96%, accompanied by increases in soil pH to 6.5, organic carbon to 1.28%, CEC to 26.35 me/100 g, and plant height by 3 cm. The combination of S. trifasciata and AMF has the potential to enhance Fe phytoremediation while improving soil chemical properties and supporting plant growth.
